Types of TMT Steel bars in India and Their uses: Birla TMT Steel

5/5 - (1 vote)

In this article we know about the types of TMT steel bars. Since the late 1990s, Thermo Mechanically Treated steel bars, or TMT steel bars as they are more popularly known, have become one of the most widely utilised types of steel bars in India. Today’s use of various TMT bar types has revolutionised the construction of RCC constructions. TMT bars are ductile and simple to weld because they have a hard exterior and a soft inside. They are the material of choice for most contemporary constructions, such as skyscrapers, dams, bridges, and flyovers, to name a few.

The current increase in construction projects around the world has boosted demand for TMT bars and other building raw materials. TMT steel bars are used in a variety of ways depending on their type since they are strong and affordable. Because they can withstand enormous loads and environmental problems (such as corrosion, hurricanes, etc.), they are also secure to use for long-term projects.

If you are a small business owner or the owner of an MSME and you want to purchase TMT steel and utilise TMT steel bars in projects, you need to comprehend the different types of TMT bars that are available, their prices, and which TMT bar is best for what.

Types of TMT Steel bars in India:

Even among small firms, the need for steel has steadily increased in India. In order to meet this rising demand, there are an increasing number of secondary steel producers in India, in addition to the top TMT steel bar manufacturers.

Based on the yield stress that TMT bars can withstand without showing any damage, they are rated. Therefore, the type of TMT bar used in building projects depends on its make-up, toughness, durability, and load-bearing capacity.

Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 550, and Fe 600 are the major four grades of TMT steel bars offered on the Indian market.

What Does ‘FE’ Stands for in TMT bar Grades?

In India, TMT bars come in four different grades: Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 550, and Fe 600.

Fe is used to describe the iron used to create these bars. The amount of force or minimum yield stress needed to bend or alter the geometry of the TMT bar is indicated by the number 500 or 550 placed after Fe.

Therefore, to modify the curvature of the bar when working with Fe 500, a force of 500 N/sq.mm is needed.

Fe 415 grade TMT bars:

These TMT bars are the least expensive ones on the market. They are easily moldable into any desired shapes due to their ductility. They are mostly utilised for modest civil and commercial construction projects, like tiny steel structures and residential buildings.

The least amount of power is needed to deform the geometry of Fe 415 TMT bars because they have a yield strength of 415 N/sq.mm. Additionally, this qualifies them for elongation with a minimum percentage of 14.5%. They have the special ability to withstand strong tremors as a result, making them suited for locations subject to earthquakes and other seismic activity. They are corrosion and rust resistant.

Fe 500 grade TMT bars:

The most popular TMT bars on the market for all types of building work are Fe 500 TMT bars and its variants, Fe 500D and Fe 500S. They cost more yet are almost 20% stronger than Fe 415 grade TMT bars despite being more expensive. As a result, you will need fewer Fe 500 TMT bars than Fe 415 TMT bars when using it for construction. Fe 500 is therefore more economical than Fe 415 in terms of cost-effectiveness.

Teams must carefully consider their options when buying raw materials because doing so might have an impact on logistics, warehousing, and other project expenditures.

Use of Fe 500 TMT bar:

  • Construction of buildings and homes, including residential high-rise projects, commercial projects, bridges, etc., need materials that are corrosion resistant and have a high weight carrying capacity.
  • Construction of RCC structures in seismic and earthquake-prone areas.

Due to their strength, stability, and safety, steel bar grades Fe 415 and Fe 500 are typically employed for RCC development projects.

Fe 550 grade TMT bars:

These TMT bars, which have a higher tensile strength, are frequently employed in industrial applications that call for the support of enormous loads. It is constructed of iron combined with carbon, sulphur, and phosphorus to form a high-grade alloy steel. Due to its durability, it is best suited for building underground projects or creating heavy structures like bridges. Although it has a lower elongation % than Fe 500 TMT steel rod, it is comparably more expensive.

Use of Fe 550 TMT bar:

building of industrial projects, including those underground, on the shore, and in the sea, etc.

undertakings involving the construction of infrastructure, such as bridges and other heavy-load-bearing structures.

Note: Special grades of TMT bars exist, including Fe 500S and Fe 550D. Here, “D” stands for ductility and “S” for saline tolerance.

Fe 600 grade TMT bars:

This is undoubtedly the strongest type of steel TMT bars utilised in infrastructure projects, such as maritime projects, bridges, etc., that need to withstand extremely enormous weights. This steel is used for long-term applications that call for corrosion-resistant materials. Additionally, these bars have a high tensile strength. Naturally, fewer steel bars are needed overall when Fe 600 is used for constructions. These also have a little amount of phosphorus, carbon, and sulphur in their makeup and an elongation percentage of 10.

Use of Fe 600 TMT bar:

  • For large-scale projects like motorways, high-rise towers, maritime constructions, and metro tracks, etc.

The chemical characteristics of the various grades of TMT bars generally do not vary all that much. The strength and ductility of the various classes vary, and this is accomplished during production by controlling the quenching process.

TMT bars in India:

In India, the building industry is expanding quickly. Steel is required in all types of building construction for strength, safety, and durability, including the building of residential complexes, schools, shopping malls, and other commercial projects, as well as the overall infrastructure development of roads, dams, and bridges.

TMT steel bars come in a number of different types and are offered in India. Their pricing can vary slightly between different states, steel vendors, and TMT bar sizes, and they are utilised for various purposes.
